Ahmed Shams El Din 

Head of Research
Ahmed Shams El Din has 16 years of rich practical experience in the financial services and consulting fields. Ahmed joined EFG Hermes in 2006 and is now Managing Director and Head of Research after holding numerous management roles. As an analyst he led the research coverage team in the Materials and Downstream Oil and Gas sectors (including Petrochemicals and Fertilisers) covering some of the largest listed industrial stocks in MENA, LSE, and Euronext N.V. He was highly ranked by international investors and fund managers as an analyst in global surveys (such as Institutional Investors, Thomson Reuters Extel and the Euromoney Middle East poll) for research in EMEA and MENA regions.
Ahmed Shams received his MBA degree from INSEAD, Executive Global MBA, Business Administration and Management.

Mohamed Abou​ Basha

Director, Research | Macroeconomics Analysis
Mohamed Abu Basha is the MENA economist at EFG Hermes Research Department with a decade of experience in macro research. He is also a member of the Macro-Strategy team covering MENA’s strategy. Prior to joining EFG, Abu Basha was an Economic Researcher at the Ministry of International Cooperation in Egypt since 2006. Abu Basha holds a BA from the American University in Cairo double majoring in Economics and Political Science.​


Hatem Alaa 

Managing Director, Research | Consumer & Healthcare

Hatem Alaa joined EFG Hermes in 2011 and is currently heading the consumer and retail team at its equity research division. Prior to joining EFG Hermes, Hatem worked for five years at HC Securities and Investment as a sell-side analyst, where he led a team that covered a number of diversified sectors in the MENA region, including consumer, logistics, transportation, steel and oil and gas. He also covered other sectors including healthcare, banking and financials. EFG’s consumer team was ranked runner up in the 2015 and 2016 Institutional Investor EMEA Research surveys. Also, Hatem ranked fifth among MENA analysts in the 2016 Extel Survey. Hatem is a CFA Charterholder and holds a BA in Business Administration from the American University in Cairo (AUC). 


Omar Maher
Vice-President, Research | Telecommunications
Omar Maher has worked as a MENA Telecom analyst at EFG Hermes since 2008 and is currently heading the Telecoms team. His coverage includes telecom stocks listed in Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and the UK. Omar joined EFG Hermes after successfully completing the firm’s Investment Banking Programme in which he ranked amongst the top 10 graduates of the class. He graduated from the Faculty of Commerce, Ain Shams University, Egypt in 2007 and from Poitiers University, France, simultaneously, with two bachelor degrees in Business Administration.

Simon Kitchen

Managing Director, Head of Strategy
Simon Kitchen has worked in Middle East financial markets for 16 years. He leads the macro-strategy team at EFG Hermes. The strategy team was top-ranked for MENA Strategy in the 2015 Institutional Investor survey. He joined the bank in 2007, initially covering economies in North Africa and the Levant. Before EFG Hermes, he worked for Eurasia Group, the political risk consultancy, in New York and Cairo, leading the firm’s coverage of Egypt, Iran and Israel. Simon studied at Edinburgh University in Scotland and Columbia University in New York.​​​​​​

Murad Ansari
Managing Director, Co-Head of Financials & Banking
Murad Ansari joined EFG Hermes in 2007 and part of the MENA financials team. His specific coverage responsibilities include banks and insurance companies in Saudi Arabia and Oman. Murad holds a Masters of Business Administration, and has over 15 years of experience of equity research and sales marketing. Before joining EFG Hermes, Murad headed the research and institutional sales effort of one of the largest investment banks in Pakistan.  

Elena Sanchez 

Managing Director, Head of Financials | Research
​​Elena Sanchez-Cabezudo serves as Co-Head of Financials Equity Research at EFG Hermes, and covers banks across different countries in the MENA region. She has 15 years of sell-side financials research experience, combining coverage of European and MENA financials. Prior to EFG Hermes, Elena was a banking analyst at HSBC in London, with a particular focus on Southern European banks. Previously, she worked as an analyst with the European Insurance Equity Research teams at HSBC and Societe Generale in London. Elena holds dual degrees in Law and Business Administration from ICADE, Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (Madrid), and has been a CFA Charterholder since 2003. ​​​​
